IBM has a wide range of PaaS and SaaS offerings across the security category. It has 3500+ security patents and 32 global security centers, including X-Force Command Centers, Solution Development Centers and Security Research Centers.
During FY2018, its revenue from security services was USD 4.8B with a 28% YOY growth. Majority of its clients are in the global financial services, banking, US healthcare, and global pharmaceutical biotech sectors.
To strengthen its security practice, it launched Watson for Cyber Security, a cognitive intelligence for security. It also launched IBM Security Connect, a platform designed to bring vendors, developers, AI, and data together to improve cyber incident response and capabilities.
It is working on cryptographic algorithms and protocols to enable end-to-end IoT security. It is also working on a new security method called lattice cryptography that will protect organizations from quantum computer-enabled hackers.
IBM has 100+ partners in its ecosystem. Some of the agreements include McAfee (April 2018) integrating IBM’s Resilient Incident Response Platform (IRP) with its Data Exchange Layer (DXL). In 2017, it partnered with Cisco to bring technology collaboration and integration to Cisco and IBM customers.
It initiated IBM Watson for cybersecurity in 2017, partnering with 40 companies and institutions such as Avnet and University of Brunswick in its beta program to cut the time spent on cybersecurity investigations and tackle the shortage of security analysts.
Investments and Innovation
In 2016, IBM invested USD 200M in cyber incidents, which included launching of IBM X-Force Incident Response and Intelligence Services. As part of the investment, it launched X-Force Command Cyber Tactical Operations Center (C-TOC) in 2018, a tailored X-force Command Center experience delivered within a semi-truck. It’ll also be used to encourage university students and school children to get into cybersecurity careers.
It launched Cybersecurity Skills Initiative for “New Collar” Jobs in 2017, sponsoring alternative education models such as Hacker High School and Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH).
