IT Strategic Planning Adoption and Best Practices
IT strategic planning is essential when the economy is good, as well when facing headwinds. The strategic road map can help an IT organization look beyond the pressures of quarter-to-quarter performance and stay focused on long-term goals, such as corporate growth and expansion, and guide it through periods of technology change. A strategic plan is also needed when major programs, such as an overhaul of legacy systems, require a long-term commitment beyond the current budget year. In this study, we describe the fundamental components of IT strategic planning, and assess current adoption trends by organization size and sector. Most Organizations Neglect IT Innovation Best Practices, Survey Finds
With the rapid pace of technology change, businesses should be champing at the bit to leverage their IT groups for innovation. But too many organizations do not give their IT groups the tools that they need to come up with innovations that could allow the business to compete better, faster, and cheaper. Personnel accounts for more than 40% of the typical IT operational budget. Therefore, properly allocating personnel time and expenses to projects, tasks, or service delivery is vital for managing IT costs and pricing IT services. Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) Adoption and Best Practices
The proliferation of smartphones, mobile applications, and desktop virtualization is spawning a surge in BYOD policies. Many IT organizations have such policies, although there is room for growth with this best practice. In this study, we first look at BYOD adoption trends by organization size and sector. We also discuss the elements that every BYOD policy should contain, critical steps required to keep the organization protected for enabling BYOD, and some of the solutions available for managing and securing mobile devices. Enterprise Architecture Adoption and Best Practices
While large IT project failures generate headlines, an even larger risk may be the incoherence that comes from developing new systems and capabilities without an overall vision or plan. Enterprise architecture is an IT best practice that provides a high-level description of the organization in its desired state. In this study, we analyze how many organizations have adopted enterprise architecture, how many have fully embraced the practice, and how many are likely to adopt the practice in the future. IT Project Portfolio Management Best Practice Adoption 2014
IT organizations have dozens or even hundreds of ongoing projects at any given point in time with many more “bright ideas” waiting for a green light. Identifying the most important projects and keeping them moving smoothly toward completion requires IT project portfolio management. Our study shows that the majority of organizations have adopted PPM as a best practice. However, less than half of those organizations using PPM have fully implemented this discipline. ITIL Implementation Trending Up, But Adoption May Slow
In theory, imposing disciplines on IT processes should improve productivity and make IT more responsive to the business. Many organizations are turning to ITIL to accomplish this goal. This study begins with a brief explanation of ITILâs history and current framework for IT service management. We next summarize ITIL adoption trends in the U.S.and Canada, examining levels of adoption by organization size and sector.
