In the years following the publication of the first part of this article, significant developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics have continued to blur the lines between human and machine. Companies such as Tesla and Boston Dynamics have advanced their robot models—Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas—integrating sophisticated AI systems that enable these machines to interact in increasingly human-like ways. This evolution raises further ethical questions regarding the rights of robots and their place in human society.
Tesla Bot (Optimus): Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, has made substantial strides since its initial introduction. The latest models integrate Tesla’s full self-driving (FSD) technology, which allows the robot to navigate complex environments autonomously. Beyond mobility, Optimus is now equipped with advanced conversational AI, similar to the language models used in Tesla vehicles. This allows the robot not only to understand and respond to voice commands but also to engage in dynamic, context-aware conversations with humans. These capabilities include interpreting emotions and adapting its responses accordingly, creating an impression of empathy and attentiveness.
Optimus is designed with the intent to assist in manufacturing environments, but Tesla envisions a broader role in household settings. With the integration of natural language processing (NLP) models, Optimus can perform household chores while interacting with users, recognizing faces, and holding conversations that simulate genuine understanding. This development reflects a shift toward designing robots that not only assist but also connect emotionally with humans.
Atlas by Boston Dynamics: Atlas, Boston Dynamics’ bipedal robot, has similarly seen advancements, particularly in its ability to interact with humans through voice and gestures. Atlas now employs an AI system that integrates sensory data from cameras and microphones to interpret human emotions and intent. By combining physical dexterity with advanced conversational AI, Atlas is capable of participating in more collaborative and social settings. In industrial environments, it works alongside humans, communicating in real-time about tasks and responding to safety concerns autonomously. In essence, Atlas is evolving beyond a functional robot into a communicative partner capable of engaging in meaningful human-robot interactions.
Both Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ Atlas incorporate advanced AI models designed to make robots more lifelike and communicative. These robots use large-scale language models to interpret human speech, discern emotions, and provide responses that seem empathetic. Unlike earlier models that relied on programmed responses, these new systems adapt to various conversational contexts, enhancing their ability to maintain coherent, flowing dialogue.
The AI systems powering these robots draw on neural networks similar to those found in OpenAI’s GPT models. These models allow for context-based learning and conversational continuity, which helps these robots simulate human-like interactions. The result is a machine that not only answers questions but also asks follow-up questions, displays understanding, and even shows humor when appropriate. Such conversational depth makes it difficult for users to perceive these robots as mere machines.

For instance, new regulations could mandate that robots programmed with conversational AI disclose that they are machines and outline their data usage practices clearly.
As robots become more integrated into human society, policymakers, ethicists, and technologists must collaborate to determine what rights, if any, should be afforded to robots. Should robots that simulate human empathy and communication be protected from harm, and should they be guaranteed ethical treatment in the workplace?
The question of robot rights will become increasingly relevant as AI technology evolves. Society must establish a balance between harnessing the benefits of these advanced robots and protecting human autonomy and ethical standards.
