Web and e-commerce staffing remains a relatively small but structurally important component of the modern IT organization. In 2025, personnel dedicated to web and e-commerce activities represented just over 3% of total IT staff at the median, a proportion that has remained largely unchanged over the past five years. This long-term stability is notable given the continued expansion of digital channels, rising customer expectations, and sustained growth in online transaction volumes. Rather than signaling stagnation or declining importance, the flat staffing trend reflects the growing maturity, scalability, and operational efficiency of web and e-commerce capabilities within most organizations.
In this study, web/e-commerce staff includes web developers, designers, administrators, and other individuals who work on the company’s public websites, as well as those who maintain intranet sites. It also includes personnel who are dedicated to e-commerce activities, such as electronic data interchange (EDI) specialists. We have a separate staffing category for personnel supporting communications and messaging systems.
