For much of the past two decades, technology modernization followed a familiar formula: launch a transformation program, deploy new technologies, achieve the target state, and move on. Cloud migrations, ERP replacements, infrastructure upgrades, and digital transformation initiatives were largely managed as discrete programs with defined budgets, timelines, and end states. Today, that approach is no longer sufficient.
Today, the paradigm has shifted. Organizations operate in an increasingly interconnected digital ecosystem where cloud platforms continuously evolve, and AI is rapidly transforming how work gets done. As a result, enterprises are moving from viewing modernization as a series of transformation programs to treating it as an embedded organizational capability. This evolution was a central theme of Avasant’s Empowering Beyond Summit 2026 panel discussion, Rethinking Technology Modernization: Turning Complexity into Competitive Advantage, featuring Drew Morefield (DXC Technology) and Pavan Pidugu (U.S. Federal Department of Transportation), moderated by Bharat Amin, Avasant Distinguished Fellow. Their perspectives highlighted how modernization is evolving from a technology program into a core business capability.
Technology initiatives are no longer isolated efforts but interconnected, continuously evolving enablers of business strategy. Modernization is no longer a destination to reach; it is a capability to sustain and continuously strengthen. This shift moves the focus beyond technology delivery toward capability enablement and value realization.
As Pavan Pidugu notes, “Five Years ago, modernization was just a destination for a lot of CIOs. Today, modernization is something we all live by.”
Success is no longer measured by program completion or technology deployment alone, but by the business outcomes modernization enables, including faster decision-making, enhanced customer experiences, greater resilience, and improved organizational agility.
Complexity is no longer a temporary challenge. It is a defining characteristic of modern enterprises, shaped by hybrid and multi-cloud environments, fragmented data, increasing regulation, cyber risk, and multi-vendor ecosystems. Left unmanaged, it drives inefficiency, higher costs, greater risk, and slower execution.
Data sits at the center of this challenge. Poor data quality and weak governance undermine decision-making, automation, and AI outcomes.
As Drew Morefield observes, “60% of AI projects in 2026 are estimated to fail, and the common denominator across all of those is bad data, leading to bad insights, hallucinations, etc. The data foundation within the enterprise has to be solid for all the other levers and accelerators to be recognized.”
Ultimately, AI success is built on strong data foundations, governance, and operational discipline. Enterprises that master complexity, rather than simply automate around it, will be best positioned to unlock the full value of AI and digital transformation.
The rise of AI has added new urgency to modernization. While AI can accelerate productivity and innovation, it also exposes weaknesses in processes, governance, and organizational readiness.
As Pavan Pidugu observed, “What we are learning is, I can produce applications quickly through AI or white coding, but we have to create good products in testing backlogs to be able to move those things faster.”
AI can speed development, but it cannot compensate for weak operational foundations. This helps explain why many AI initiatives stall beyond the pilot stage. The challenge is rarely the technology itself, but the enterprise’s ability to scale it through robust processes, governance, and operating models.
The organizations generating the greatest value from AI are redesigning workflows, redefining roles, strengthening governance, and embedding intelligence into core business processes. They view AI not as a standalone technology initiative, but as a catalyst for broader business transformation.
The gap between leaders and laggards is no longer technology adoption. Most organizations have access to the same cloud, AI, and digital capabilities. What sets leaders apart is their ability to execute with discipline and deliver measurable business outcomes.
Organizations that fall behind often struggle with fragmented pilots, poor business alignment, and weak foundations in data, governance, architecture, and process standardization. In contrast, leading organizations focus on high-value opportunities, design for enterprise scale from the outset, and maintain a clear link between modernization investments and business results. They understand a fundamental truth: competitive advantage comes not from eliminating complexity, but from managing it better than competitors. To do so, organizations need a structured and disciplined approach to modernization, one that strengthens foundations, scales repeatable capabilities, embeds governance, and keeps business value at the center.

The competitive landscape has fundamentally shifted. As technology becomes increasingly accessible and commoditized, differentiation depends less on what organizations adopt and more on how effectively they translate technology into measurable business outcomes.
As Drew Morefield notes, “Look for the pain points in the business that are impacting revenue, customer satisfaction or competitive differentiation in the market. Modernize end-to-end, look for patterns within that modernization imperative and then replicate across the business to the extent relevant.”
His observation reinforces a critical reality, modernization is no longer a technology initiative, but a business transformation imperative driven by enterprise priorities and scaled through repeatable capabilities.

By addressing business-critical challenges, modernizing with purpose, and replicating successful patterns across functions, they create the foundation for long-term resilience and competitive advantage. Success will depend less on simplifying complexity and more on mastering it.
