Enterprises’ growing need for more data at faster speeds to support real-time analytics, generative AI, omnichannel communications, and other digital initiatives is driving the adoption of advanced networking technologies. While our survey shows companies achieving a strong ROI and substantial benefits, high upfront costs and complex integration can pose challenges for leaner industries.
As shown in Figure 1 of our Advanced Networking Adoption Trends and Customer Experience 2024 report, advanced networking delivers exceptionally high ROI and TCO success rates but sees only moderate adoption and investment rates compared to the 14 other popular technologies in our study. This indicates that while nearly half of the surveyed organizations have yet to adopt advanced networking, those that have adopted it are reaping significant value from their investments.
Advanced networking enables the smooth exchange of information and global connectivity. It covers a range of innovative solutions and protocols that improve the efficiency, speed, and reliability of data transmission and communication within computer networks. This includes emerging technologies such as Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7, 5G private networks, 6G networks, software-defined wide area networks (SD-WAN), mesh networks, and LiFi networks. These technologies are transforming how businesses operate, enabling new use cases in IoT, remote work, and cloud computing, while also addressing the rising demand for efficient and resilient networks.
Despite the benefits of advanced networking technologies, many companies remain hesitant to invest due to high costs and integration challenges. Upgrading to technologies like 5G, Wi-Fi 7, or SD-WAN often requires significant spending on infrastructure and training, which can be daunting for smaller enterprises. Legacy systems, security concerns, and regulatory complexities further contribute to a cautious, wait-and-see approach.
“Deciding to invest in advanced networking technologies is a no-brainer as the potential benefits are substantial,” said Waynelle John, research analyst for Avasant Research, based in Los Angeles. “However, leaner businesses should strategically evaluate the most suitable advanced networking solutions and determine the optimal timing for their adoption and investment.”
Knowing when to adopt or invest in advanced networking technologies is vital for maintaining a competitive edge and operational efficiency. Timely adoption can unlock benefits like enhanced connectivity and support for emerging technologies such as IoT and AI, while premature investment can lead to wasted resources and integration challenges. On the other hand, delaying the investment could leave the company behind competitors who are already using 5G to optimize supply chains and enhance customer engagement. Business leaders must, therefore, plan their investments carefully.
