Effectiveness of System Management and Monitoring Tools

April, 2003

Managing desktop, server, and mainframe system performance and availability are critical requirements for any IT organization. Many companies now demand extremely high availability from their hardware platforms – in many cases this can mean engineering complete fail-over capability into your environment.

Providing an effective system management strategy is an essential element in maintaining high availability in complex data centers. Of course, one of the most important factors in developing an effective system management strategy is deploying the proper tools to assist IT technicians in maintaining the required service levels.

Computer Economics recently surveyed IT management in midsize to large organizations regarding the effectiveness of their system management and monitoring tools. The results of the survey are shown in Figure 1.

Survey results indicate that many organizations have not hit the right balance of tools to effectively manage their IT environment. While almost 60% rated their system management and monitoring tools as very effective or effective, almost one-third of the managers rated their tools as marginally effective or not effective at all.
