Practice Maturity
- IBM was one of the creators of this industry, especially the Applied AI space, when it launched the Watson AI engine in 2011. Since then, the platform and IBM’s offerings that leverage it have been used to develop groundbreaking use cases in nearly all industries. Clients come to IBM for its technical, business prowess, and for the vast experience and mature processes it brings to its engagements.
- IBM continues to bring more products and services through its ongoing core technology research and development programs. It is increasingly making it simpler for clients to use third-party engines. Its recently released AI open scale platform and IBM Watson Studio both support the IBM public and private clouds, AWS, Azure, OpenShift, OpenStack, TensorFlow, Caffe2, Spark, Scikit-learn, Kubernetes, and many more.
- It also and helps clients with its AI Ladder approach to not only implement the product, but to also develop its data strategy to make it AI-ready, and eventually take AI into production, a step that many enterprises struggle with.
Partnership Ecosystem
- With IBM’s pioneering position in the industry, it has a very vast partnership ecosystem that spans technology firms (recent: DocuSign,ProStrategy, Creative Computing); platform providers (recent: Box, Denodo), industry consortia (recent: AI Horizons Network and Partnership on AI). These are in addition to working more closely with other platform providers, a number of system integrators and advisors.
- Its research center works with multiple academic institutes for core technology as well as AI applications. It recently launched an MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab as part of its collaboration with MIT for joint research in AI science and technology.
Investments and Innovation
- Apart from its core ongoing R&D investment through IBM Research, it is also focusing significantly on developing skills in areas related to AI and advanced analytics for its mid-level workforce, for which it has earmarked USD 5B over 10 years. It uses a P-TECH education model consisting of apprenticeships and retraining programs.
- IBM is expanding its capabilities through strategic acquisitions such as Truven Health (2016) to use its analytics and other capabilities to improve Watson Health, Promontory (2016) to train Watson in regulatory field, Armanta (2018) to help financial services firms meet related regulatory compliance.
