The IT organization is often perceived as a cost sink. However, when IT costs are made transparent, a deeper understanding of the value of IT can be achieved. In this study, we look at how far along organizations are in implementing two distinct but related IT financial management best practices: chargeback and showback of IT costs. We also assess chargeback and showback adoption by organization size and sector. We conclude by discussing some of the ways to make both practices work for IT organizations. (23 pp., 12 fig.)
