The number of security incidents between January and June 2003 exceeded 70,000, which is about twice the rate for 2002. Assessing the economic return from security investments is almost impossible, but few companies tabulate the costs of repairing a hacked website or cleansing a virus from their email systems. Consequently, few organizations provide even a moderate amount of protection to their IT systems and sensitive information.
