Our analysis of IS staffing trends over the last four years shows that there has been an increase in the percent of staff in help desk functions and a shift of staff from applications programming positions into e-commerce positions. The percentage of IS help desk staff have increased from six percent in 1997/98 to ten percent in the year 2000.

Our research shows that the MIS director title is still used widely in small to midsize companies. Our forecasts include IT staff expenditures by U.S. industry sector, including agriculture, communications, construction, discrete manufacturing, utilities, financial services, health services, hotels and lodging, insurance, natural resources, process manufacturing, retail distribution, transportation, wholesale distribution, state and local government, and federal government. We also make U.S. projections for IT staff spending by organization size, which includes small organizations that have fewer than 100 employees and large organizations with over 100 employees.
