Rates for Programming Services
During the fourth quarter of 1999 we worked with several IT shops to benchmark hourly rates for programming services. We found that rates had changed very little since the beginning of 1999. Figure 1 shows hourly rates for skills in several programming languages.

CIO and MIS Director Salaries
The average salaries of CIOs and MIS directors have risen to a higher rate than salaries for any other IT function. Our research shows that the MIS director title is still used widely in small to midsize companies. Figure 1 shows CIO and MIS director U.S. average salaries for 1983 through 1999 and projected salaries for 2000 and 2001.

Computer Economics forecasts of IT spending on staff provide a comprehensive look at what private companies and public organizations will spend in this area from 2000 to 2002. Our forecasts include IT staff expenditures by U.S. industry sector, including agriculture, communications, construction, discrete manufacturing, utilities, financial services, health services, hotels and lodging, insurance, natural resources, process manufacturing, retail distribution, transportation, wholesale distribution, state and local government, and federal government. We also make U.S. projections for IT staff spending by organization size, which includes small organizations that have fewer than 100 employees and large organizations with over 100 employees.

Visa International reported that global sales volume surpassed US$1.8 trillion for the year ending December 31, 2000. This represents a 21% increase in global sales volume over 1999. Visa also saw a 19% increase in the number of Visa transactions. During the peak holiday shopping season in December 2000, Visa processed almost 4,000 transactions per second. Visa saw the most dramatic growth in its CEMEA (Central Europe-Middle East-Africa), Asia-Pacific, and Latin America & Caribbean regions with year-to-year growth rates of 51%, 45%, and 31% respectively. There are currently over one billion Visa payment cards issued globally. The Visa acceptance network includes over 21 million merchants and 652,000 ATMs.
