Some IT management best practices enjoy fairly consistent use—those concerning IT security or disaster recovery, for instance. But other best practices have yet to establish much of a foothold. Surprisingly, these include some that are easy to establish and deliver significant benefits, according to this year’s IT Management Best Practices study from Computer Economics.

Chargeback and Showback Adoption and Best Practices
The IT organization is often perceived as a cost sink. However, when IT costs are made transparent, a deeper understanding of the value of IT can be achieved. In this study, we look at how far along organizations are in implementing two distinct but related IT financial management best practices: chargeback and showback of IT costs. We also assess chargeback and showback adoption by organization size and sector. We conclude by discussing some of the ways to make both practices work for IT organizations. (23 pp., 12 fig.) Data Center Outsourcing Trends and Customer Experience 2017
Data center outsourcing remained relatively stable over the course of the recession, but now appears to be rising. As business growth resumes, IT organizations face decisions on how best to support that increased growth, including whether to upgrade infrastructure, turn to hosting service providers, or move some computing resources to the cloud. In this study, we provide IT executives with insight into how broadly and eagerly their peers are undertaking outsourcing as a data center strategy. We also examine the success rates that organizations are having with reducing cost and improving service through outsourcing the critical data center function. The proliferation of smartphones, mobile applications, and desktop virtualization is spawning a surge in BYOD policies. Many IT organizations have such policies, although there is room for growth with this best practice. In this study, we first look at BYOD adoption trends by organization size and sector. We also discuss the elements that every BYOD policy should contain, critical steps required to keep the organization protected for enabling BYOD, and some of the solutions available for managing and securing mobile devices.
